Bighorn Cabin 1
Have breakfast with Bighorn sheep at Rock Creek in beautiful Western Montana!
We had dreamed of building this cabin for a long time – and in the summer of 2019 our dreams got put into motion when we broke ground and put in foundations for Bighorn Cabins #1 & #2! The process has taken a bit longer than anticipated, as I kept adding customized items for Joe to build, but we’re now able to offer Cabin #1 for rent beginning in April of 2021!
It’s been a fun process of planning as we go. We knew we wanted the general footprint to be just like the cabin where we had our fly-shop, but we wanted to make more efficient use of the space. Even though from the outside it looks almost identical, there are significant differences.
We designed a bump-out to the rear, which allowed us to push the bathroom out a bit and gave us room for a sleeping alcove in the area just opposite. Not really a full bedroom, but a private space separate from the main bedroom, the sleeping alcove has a customized built-in twin bed, made from reclaimed timbers and barn wood, enclosed with reclaimed timbers and a curtain that can be drawn for privacy. Pass through the hallway, past the bathroom and the sleeping alcove to the bedroom with a queen bed (also custom built), hand crafted armoire closet with drawer, a bench with hooks above – and a ceiling fan just above the bed for those summer nights when you want to move the cool mountain air coming in through the open windows.
The small kitchen has a glass top range, refrigerator, and microwave…and a retro-look. The custom made kitchen may be small, but it’s nicely equipped with just about everything you could need. With beautiful open shelving above, and blue pine cabinets below it’s a stunning space. The bar has seating for 4 and a spacious area for food prep. Additionally, just out the back door on the deck, is a weber grill and seating for 4 at the table.
The living room, just off the kitchen area, has 2 chairs with a shared ottoman, and a large chair that converts to a sleeper – perfect for a second child to sleep on. In the shared kitchen/living room space is a beautiful entertainment center with flat screen TV and satellite TV service.
Notice the reclaimed timbers and barn board accents…all lovingly crafted into new life. The bathroom is a piece of art with a barn door and vanity made from salvaged barn-wood that we found locally. The vanity sink is of hammered copper, and the beam that goes through the middle of the ceiling looks solid, made to look that way by Joe’s gifted hands. All this complements the blue pine walls, and the beautiful view just outside the window that looks at the mountain.
The front porch is inviting, with two rockers and a game table in between for a friendly game of checkers, chess or just enjoying a cool beverage while enjoying the view. The big yard to the south will often be filled with Bighorn sheep and their babies because this property butts up to the mountain area where the ewes have their babies every spring.
This cabin is one of two on the property – we will be framing cabin #2 in the early spring of 2021 and when it’s finished will be perfect for those who want to stay in close proximity to one another, but have the privacy of their own cabins. Cabin #2 will have 2 full bedrooms…stay tuned for pictures on Facebook as we make progress.
